Fun Alphabet Sounds and Letter Games for Your Child

We all want our children to have excellent literacy skills. And for that it is imperative to start exposing your child to the alphabets from an early age.

Now coming to the next question, “From where do I start?”

Let’s get started with some interactive games.

GAME #1: Find the Right Letters!

This game will teach kids to identify individual letters and also work on their fine motor skills.

What you will need:

– A Pen
-Sticky notes /or/ Any small physical letters. (small cut out pieces of paper, small blocks, etc.)
HOWEVER
– If you already have alphabet blocks and/or alphabet magnets or toys, that will work. Just make sure it has both lower and upper cases for a little more challenge.

How to Play:

  1. Write down each alphabet on a writable surface separately. Make sure to include both lower and upper cases.
  2. Hide the individual alphabets in different places.
  3. Now tell your child to find any letter that comes to mind. It can be a letter in their name. It could be finding all the letters of a word (for example: Cat, or Car, or Bat.)
  4. Have reward systems for finding the right letter in a set duration, or spelling out a word correctly.

GAME #2: Writing Letters in Flour/ Sand

Playing this game can develop a number of cognitive skills. It allows children to create art with a deeper understanding of three-dimensional shapes and can help them identify patterns

What you will need:

– A Pan
-Sand OR Flour

How to Play:

1. Fill the pan with your choice of material out of the two.

2. Sit you child down in front of it and say the letters chronologically, or if they are more advanced, randomly.

All your child has to do is use their finger to write down said letter or word, and that’s it! A fun way to remember the alphabet that your child will surely enjoy.

GAME #3: Bag of Rice

What you will need:

– Ziplock Bag
– Any small materials with letters written on them (Scrabble tiles, Pieces of paper with letters written on them, magnetic letters etc.)
– Rice to fill the bag with.
-Piece of paper
– Pen/ Pencil

How to Play:

  1. Fill out the Ziplock Bag with rice.
  2. Add the letters to the bag and shake.
  3. Tell your child to find certain letters.
  4. Once found, tell them to write down that letter on a separate piece of paper on the side.
  5. You can repeat till the time your child knows all the Alphabets!

GAME #4: Alphabet Marco Polo

What you will need:

-Physical Letters to hold (Magnets, Scrabble Tiles, Blocks, Piece of papers with letters written on them.)

How to Play:

1. Tell your child to grab a letter and go hide.

2. When you yell “Letter”, they should also yell the letter in their hand till you find them.

This game definitely helps to teach a child the alphabet sounds!

GAME #5: Alphabet Book

This one is a great crafting activity that your child will enjoy!

What you will need:

-Paper
-Colourful Pencils/Pens
– Glitter and other child-friendly decoration materials
– Hole Puncher
– Ribbon

How to Play:

  1. On each piece of paper tell them to write each letter of the alphabet in upper and lower case respectively.
  2. Now tell them to draw a picture of an object that starts with said letter on that letter’s page.
  3. Tell them to go crazy and decorate however they would like.
  4. This is where you come in! Punch holes onto the sides of each page. (Make sure positioning is the same on each page.)
  5. Finally with the help of your child, put a ribbon through the holes and tie together.

Through this process, your child learns the alphabet phonetically and visually, while also expressing their creativity which is amazing for their cognitive skills!
