Introduction

Numbers and counting are naturally a part of your child's day. From counting his toes to saying, “one, two, three, go!” while playing in the garden, he is already observing and gathering information about numbers.

Use these opportunities to develop early mathematical skills in your child.

Steps

Point to objects in your kitchen and around the house and count them for your child. Ask your child to count with you.

Ask your child, "How many cups are there?" , "How many spoons are there on the stand?", ask your child to count the number of red shirts, the black shoes etc.

Help your child to count out loud to find the answer.

Let your child name the parts of the body & count them.
Let your child count his/her :
* Hands - 1, 2.
* Fingers - 1, 2, 3 …… 10.
* Toes, Ears, Eyes, Feet etc.
Show the corresponding number flashcards.

Count the number of crayons while your child is colouring, count the number of stairs as you and your child take, count the fruits as you buy. Find ways to practice counting every day with your child. Allow your child to touch the objects as he/she is counting.
